Under the direction of head coach Amanda Heethuis, the Mona Shores High School competitive cheer program has garnered statewide recognition as one of the most accomplished. With multiple top 5 finishes in the last handful of years at the Michigan High School Athletic Association championships, the Sailors are able to compete with, and often beat, schools more than twice their size with a good deal of regularity.
It is within Muskegon County where the Sailors have been especially successful. Since the 2006-2007 school year, the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association has conducted a competitive cheer tournament for the county. In the 16 competitions they have held, Mona Shores has only finished second once, in 2008-2009 when Reeths-Puffer was nearly ten points better than them. Since then, they have rattled off 13 straight first-place finishes, establishing themselves as the dominant program in the Muskegon area.
The ladies have had similar success in the Ottawa-Kent athletic conference. The most recent conference title was solidified at the OK Green championships at Zeeland West High School on February 1st, capping a run of five straight for the Sailors. It was their 8th OK conference championship in the last decade, an incredible run that includes 7 teams who won academic all-state awards from the Competitive Cheer Coaches Association of Michigan.
